Abstract :
An experimental approach to on-line monitor the diamond cutting process based on the root mean square (RMS) value of the acoustic emission (AE) signals is presented. Cylindrical work-pieces of 6061-T6 aluminum were used with the cutting speed varied from 40 to 120 m/min., depth of cut 1 to 50 micrometers, feed from 6 to 42 micrometers/rev., and rake angles -4 to 4 degrees. The results showed that the AE signals are sensitive to the change of input parameters to the cutting process: cutting speed, feed, depth of cut, and rake angle. Thus, by using AE signals as an index, the described technique can be expanded to establish an adaptive control loop to better monitor the diamond machining process
