Abstract :
A digital sensor system with an on-chip delta modulation loop is presented. The delta (Δ) modulator oversamples and modulates the analog sensor signal into a high frequency 1-bit digital pulse stream. A digital up-down counter, used as a primitive digital low pass filter, rejects the undesired high frequency quantization noise of the 1-bit digital pulse stream and improves its resolution. 10-bit resolution is achieved by using the oversampling ratio=1024. A sensor array can be constructed using this Δ modulation loop. The sensor signal from each sensor element can be fully digitized using the time division multiplexing scheme
