Abstract :
It is noted that two essential factors influence the operating behavior of girth gear drives, namely the dynamic behavior of the drive train and the load distribution along the tooth flanks. These operating parameters can be analyzed by means of field measurements with the application of strain gauges, and the measured figures can be used for setting up suitable calculation models. This enables operating conditions to be simulated and the individual components of the drive system to be mutually matched in an optimum way. By means of examples from practice the authors explain how the causes of damage can be determined by a combination of computer analysis and measurements for the entire system and how remedial action can be taken
