Abstract :
Dennis Gabor, 1900-1979, applied physicist, engineer, inventor and polymath, is best known as the father of holography for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1971. He also did some quite outstanding research in communication theory and signal processing in the 1940´s, and his results are still in active use today. The paper puts this work into historical perspective and briefly surveys current important engineering applications.
