  • Abstract
In this paper, investigations carried out to explore the impact of a voltage sourced converter-based back-to-back on the performance of generator distance phase backup protection as well as on the coordination between such a protection and the generator overexcited steady-state capability limit. The voltage sourced converter-based back-to-back is installed to connect a weak and a strong systems. The results of the investigations show that the back-to-back has an adverse effect on the performance of generator distance phase backup protection. Such an impact varies according to the fault type, its location and the generator loading. Moreover, this adverse impact extends to affect the coordination between the generator distance phase backup protection and the generator overexcited steady-state capability limit. The dynamic simulations of a test benchmark are conducted using the PSCAD/EMTDC software.
