Abstract
Since the number of mobile users is continuously growing, we shrink cell size to increase the system capacity. By shrinking the cell size, the handoff rate is increased. To overcome these problems, a hierarchical cell structure is proposed. Because efficient use of radio resources is very important, utilization of all resources have to be maximized. Thus, in a hierarchical cell structure, how to assign available radio resources to each user is critical question. So far, several studies have been made on static radio resource management in a hierarchical cell structure. However, in order to adapt to changes of traffic, it is necessary to consider adaptive radio resource management. Thus, in this study, we propose an adaptive radio resource management in a CDMA based hierarchical cell structure. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by means of computer simulation. The results show that the proposed scheme improves call blocking, call dropping and utilization of radio resource compared with conventional schemes.
