Abstract
A simple model of the chemical acid-base regulation in blood is formulated and analysed. The model incorporates only two interacting buffers representing bicarbonate and non-bicarbonate (mainly hemoglobin and plasma proteins) buffers. The results obtained show that, in spite of its simplicity, this model represents accurately a large set of relationships between CO2 concentration and partial pressure, pH, base excess (BE) within the physiological range of variables
