Abstract :
The most dangerous failure event in load carrying components and structures is associated with the physical fracture of the material. The physical fracture occurs when the external loads exceed the material strength. Probabilistic methods are presented jointly with fracture mechanics concepts for the purpose of the failure risk assessment. The emphasis is on the influence of uncertainties arising from the statistical variation of the natural defects existing in load carrying elements and from the material fracture toughness as well
