Abstract
The paper describes the transient behaviour of a synchronous generator when a large induction motor is switched direct on line. The influence of the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator), the damper winding parameters and the pre-load of the generator are described. Comparison is made with analytical formulae for calculating voltage drops at sudden load increase. The simulations in the time domain are performed using the flux linkages of generator and motor as state space variables. The AVR and equations of motion (for motor and generator) are described as a set of first order differential equations
