  • Abstract
THE WORLD\´S LARGEST consumer technology trade show, CES, held in Las Vegas in January 2015, was deluged with \´Internet of Things\´ (IoT) launches. Connected and selfdriving cars, home automation devices and major manufacturers\´ signing up to open standards for IoT were major news at CES. Research firm Gartner predicts 25 billion IoT devices will be in existence by 2020, including one in five vehicles worldwide (circa 250 million). IDC predicts the total IoT market will be over $7tr by 2020, while GSMA and Machina Research predict IoT devices will save the global economy $2tr through efficiencies, citing examples including "smart meters removing the need for manual meter readings and... clinical remote-monitoring for patients with chronic illnesses".
