Abstract :
The four panelists opened the session by brief presentations on (a) ferrite core materials, (b) metalic strip core materials, (c) transformers with rectifiers and capacitive filter loads, and (d) conductor losses in high-frequency inductive devices due to leakage magnetic fields. The session was then thrown open for questions and general discussions concerning the relative merits of ferrite vs metalliccore materials for high-frequency inverter and fly-back transformers and energy-storage inductors. There was also a considerable amount of questioning and discussion regarding the relationships between frequency, conductor cross-section, leakage flux, and losses in high-frequency inductive devices. There was also some discussion relative to the effects of core air-gaps upon conductor losses. The formal session was terminated at 10:00 PM, but the several panelists continued to answer questions from individuals gathered at the front of the podium for another half-hour.
