Abstract :
Unique equipment for production of submicron- and nano-powders of metals, alloys, organic and inorganic compounds, has been developed. The article gives a brief review of our research into production of superfine powders based on their processing in a bulk bed with the help of gas jets. A peculiarity of this research is that all essential technological processes of submicron powder production are realized in the same unit by changing the mode of operation. The high purity of end products, after size reduction of hard and superhard materials (carbides, nitrides, oxides of some metals), is explained by domination of interparticle interactions (interparticle abrasion), instead of interaction of particles with working surfaces. As an example, the analysis of impurities in beryllium oxide powders, before and after processing in our unit, is presented. The initial powder had a specific surface of 7200 cm2/g and the end product had 12300 cm2 /g. Similar characteristics are obtained also by combining the processes of size reduction and classification of a wide class of materials
