Abstract :
The importance of human factors in plant design is well recognized. British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) has invested in human factors expertise, and this is illustrated in the design of the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project (AMWTP). The main purpose is to ensure the safety and operability of the plant and equipment from a human factors perspective. Various human factors techniques were adopted in order to address different parts of the project. Human factors personnel took ownership of the design and procurement of key interfaces, including the central control room (CCR), VDU-based control system displays and all of the local plant and remote handling workstations. This paper details the selection of human factors techniques and shows, by example, the impact they had on the design and future operation of AMWTP.
