Abstract
The design of trellis codes that achieve good performance on fixed intersymbol interference (ISI) channels and frequency selective multipath fading ISI channels is considered. New guidelines are proposed that allow the design aspects of a trellis code to be decoupled from their performance on an ISI channel. In particular, it is shown that one should maximize both the minimum squared Euclidean distance and the growth rate of the squared Euclidean distance with the length of the error events. Simulation results are provided to support the new design criteria
