Abstract
This paper examines the significant operational considerations of introducing moving block (MB) ATC on either established or new heavy metro systems having close headway services. It identifies characteristics and limitations of MB train control which may not be immediately apparent to operators more familiar with conventional fixed block systems. The paper draws on knowledge gained from modelling studies which have supported the development and application of the WESTRACE Train Control System, being installed by Westinghouse Signals Limited on the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension and existing line. As reported by Chew (1994), this will be the first application of a radio based MB system on a heavy metro
