Abstract
The physical interpretation of wavelet transform is presented in this paper by comparing its band pass filter properties with that of short time Fourier transform. The fault signal on a practical 500 kV power system as generated by EMTP is analyzed with Morlet wavelets. It is shown that wavelets with automatically adjusted time windows can be used to capture and analyze fault-induced transients from frequency bands, which will be significant for a better fault detection.
