  • Abstract
We analyze the response of logging-while-drilling (LWD) tools for oil exploration in complex three-dimensional borehole environments using finite-volume (FV) algorithms in cylindrical coordinates. Both eccentric boreholes and dipping beds scenarios are considered. In order to model eccentric boreholes, a face-based locally-conformal FV scheme is employed. We implement two distinct FV approaches, viz., the direct-field formulation and the coupled vector-scalar potentials formulation. The numerical results show that both FV approaches provide accurate results for the examples considered.
