Abstract
A one megawatt, space based dc-dc power converter has been designed which has an input voltage of 5kV //sup+/sub -// 3% an an ouput voltage of 100kV //sup +/sub -//0.25%. The estimated system mass is 83.8 kg (184lb) and the overall system efficiency estimate is 87%. The system has an opencycle cooling system with cryogenic hydrogen gas as the bridge inverer using MOS-controlled Thyristors (MCT) as the swithcing devices, a resonance transformer [1] to step up the voltage, and a non-rigid housing which provides on-demand pressurization of the power converter localenvironment. The capacitors for the resonance transformer have power densities of up to 0.0004 kg/kVAR. The resonance transformer inductors are designed for light weight, gas cooling, low shunt capacitance, and high Q at 50 kHz. The design considerations and scalability of thissystem design will be discussed.
