Abstract
A simple, single-particle computer simulation of the dielectric surface avalanche process is described. The program is used to determine the critical magnetic field for "liftoff" of the avalanche from the insulator surface under general, non-uniform field conditions. Results of the simulations are presented which point to the importance of conditions at the cathode for producing magnetic inhibition of surface flashover. Experimental results are included which substantiate qualitatively the results of the computer simulations.
