Abstract :
A new concept of multi-phase inductively-driven shaftless centrifugal pumps is introduced here. By combining power electronics, creative induction machine design and centrifugal pump principles, four distinct designs of shaft-less and compact pump systems have been proposed and analyzed by three-dimensional time-stepping finite element simulations. The simulation results show the viability of this new concept design. Although their power efficiencies are less than those of conventional induction motors, they have advantages of being bearingless, shaft-less and have far less risk of leakage or contamination of the fluid to be pumped. They can have important potential in biomedical and bioengineering applications
