Abstract :
This paper presents a framework for analysing the impact of distributed generation scenarios on distribution networks and businesses. The framework has been designed using knowledge gained from power industry experts through the use of knowledge engineering techniques. The expert knowledge acquired relating to distributed generation has been carefully structured to enable the specification of a comprehensive analysis framework. This framework facilitates the development of distributed generation scenarios in restructured electricity markets and the assessment of the effect of such scenarios on the distribution network and, subsequently, on the distribution utility business. With such information relating to possible outcomes for the network and business the utility is well placed to test strategic options aimed at harnessing the valuable independent generation resource within its franchise area. Initial results highlighting possible outcomes for distributed generation scenarios in a reference distribution network are presented to illustrate an implementation of the general analysis framework
