Abstract
This paper proposes a simplified and systematic characterization procedure for an alternate qd induction machine model (AQDM). This approach formulates the parameter identification process as an optimization problem. The resulting optimization problem has a large search space (17 free parameters) but was found to be readily solved using a genetic algorithm. It is experimentally shown that the AQDM accurately predicts machine performance when the parameters are determined using the proposed approach. It is also experimentally shown that a control strategy based on the AQDM with the parameters determined using the proposed method achieves the desired performance
