Abstract
The successful intercultural communication relies not only on language ability but also the full understanding of the social and cultural background of English-speaking countries. This paper introduces an investigation of Computer Science and Engineering major students´ social cultural competence. The result shows that their language ability and social cultural ability are not closely related. The present situation for Computer Science and Engineering major students is, although they have studied English for quite a few years, although they have passed the College English Test Band 4, they actually lack the ability to communicate in English effectively with native speakers. In the process of language teaching, importance should be attached to the appropriateness of a language as well as the correctness of language forms and fixed language rules.
