Abstract
This paper presents a low-phase-noise and wide-tuning-range LC digital controlled oscillator (DCO). With six control words, the DCO obtains 0.8 GHz tuning range. This structure adopts two important technologies to suppress the phase noise. Using an LC noise filter at the source of the cross-coupled pMOS, it suppresses the second harmonic frequency noise. And a tail current-shaping technology is used to ensure the current peak align with the output voltage peak. The LC DCO is fabricated in SMIC 65nm CMOS technology. The proposed DCO exhibits an average phase noise of -127 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from 2.35 GHz to 3.15 GHz carriers.
