Abstract
Previous research documented the value of managerial ties in emerging economies such as China. Integrating institutional theory and social capital view, the paper developed a matrix to analyze the nature of ties, and emphasized the distinctive economic and institutional attributes of ties with a dialectical perspective. Using data from 270 firms in Chinese manufacturing industry, the paper demonstrated the different effects of ties on performance. Besides, the paper explored the role of ownership (domestic vs. foreign) and environment dynamism. The results support the view that institutional and environment factors influence the value of ties.
