Abstract :
Within the last year, CPI has delivered a modified VMS 1873 magnetron. The device is based on a 1992 design for the US Army. The magnetron puts out 30 MW of peak power at S-band with an overall DC to RF conversion efficiency of 45%. With its larger electromagnet, the original VMS-1873 magnetron operated at up to 60% efficiency. Part of the program was a life test of 4 x 107 pulses of 1.2 μs width. The life test was successful. During the life test, output power increased slightly over time as the cathode surface emission improved.
