Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to describe how intelligent technology is being applied in the form of an expert system to aid in providing technical assistance to the US Surface Navy for the VLS. VTAEXS was developed and is in use by the VLS In-Service Engineering Agent (ISEA) at PHD NSWC. It provides diagnostic and troubleshooting advice to the shipboard VLS technicians (USN Gunner´s Mate rate) when VLS operational and maintenance problems arise that are beyond their capability to resolve. VTAEXS is a knowledge based (KB) system for diagnosis, its main feature includes case based and model based reasoning (CBR and MBR)
