Abstract
The size versus performance tradeoff is investigated for hybrid phased arrays consisting of multiple mode subarrays. First, the general topology and design parameters of such an array is described with respect to size and complexity. Finally, full wave electromagnetic simulation results are presented for 3 arrays each with 16 feed points. It is shown that the hybrid array with 4 sets of 4 mode subarrays delivers beam synthesis performance similar to the full multiple mode array, but with a 43% reduction in size.
