Abstract
The IEEE 802.16e-2005, and amendment to the IEEE 802.16 standard, adds a new service flow called extended real-time polling service (ertPS). This service is designed for real-time traffic with variable data rates. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of the mechanism on ertPS traffic. We first analyze the existing modules proposed for simulation of IEEE 802.16-based networks using ns-2 and choose the best of them. Then, we present a comprehensive study on the performance of ertPS traffic associated with the other traffic flows through extensive simulations. The results give important conclusions about the QoS of ertPS traffic flow, fairness of the users that are using ertPS service and traffic load impacts between the services in the IEEE 802.16e standard.
