Abstract
Summary form only given. We resolve the femtosecond free polarization decay of excitons in GaAs quantum wells by upconverting the diffracted signal in transient four wave mixing experiments. We find that the temporal profile exhibit large deviations from that expected from isolated atomic like systems. They also represent the first observation of the dynamics of the development of a macroscopic coherence via a Ginzburgh-Landau mechanism
