Abstract :
Modeling and dimensioning problems in broadband access networks, including a description of the broadband environment and development of the suitable traffic reference models and bandwidth resource dimensioning rules have been discussed. Despite uncertainty with regard to future traffic and service characteristics, which cannot be predicted accurately, it has proved possible to make a reasonable estimate of demand for services to be used in a pilot installation of the broadband access network. The system architecture and the implications of the service attributes and traffic characteristics on the network topology as well as its evolutionary upgrade path have been also outlined
