Abstract :
Respiratory failure may be caused by a number of pathological processes. Often the only applicable treatment is to ventilate the patient with a machine, the mechanical ventilator that provides a controlled flow of gas into a patient´s airways to substitute or support his own breathing. Since there are a huge variety of pathologies and many available modes of ventilation to deal with them, it is important to evaluate the mechanical ventilation mode applied to the patient with severe pulmonary disease. By using fuzzy assessment method, we propose a respiratory mathematic model based approach to examine the patient´s situation and objectively evaluated the used ventilation mode with respect to the physicians strategic goals. The assessment example demonstrates that fuzzy assessment method is valuable in evaluating mechanical ventilation as needed in the context of the development of (semi-)automated individualized ventilation support.
