Abstract :
Lightning caused surge voltages in low-voltage AC power circuits are studied statistically based on the Monte Carlo method in this paper. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to solve the multi-conductor transmission line equations. A transformer model is incorporated into the FDTD solution. Both direct and indirect lightning strikes are taken into account in the statistical evaluation. Results show that installing surge arresters on 10 kV overhead lines has a notable influence on the surge level on 220V sides.
