Abstract :
The concatenation of a maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) equalizer and a Viterbi decoder is a powerful means for improving the performance of mobile communication system receivers. The best system performance is obtained when the Viterbi algorithm is used with soft decisions. The soft output MLSE equalizer enables the use of soft decision Viterbi decoding. This paper investigates the performance of a new time division multiple access (TDMA) cellular system that employs a soft output MLSE equalizer and a Viterbi decoder. Simulation results are presented for multipath Rayleigh fading channels having various delay profiles
