Abstract :
Summary form only given. By using a universal personal number, universal personal telecommunications (UPT) enable an enhanced access to multiple networks (wired and wireless) at any terminal. A high level of security is a necessary condition for a service like UPT. Accountability, incontestable charging, and privacy are important examples of requirements that have to be fulfilled by technical and organizational security measures. A basic security feature is the authentication of the users to the service. Assuming that most terminals do not have a smart card reader, the use of an advanced DTMF device supporting a cryptological one pass authentication mechanism is an appropriate method. A UPT smart card to be used in such a device as well as in card reading telephones is, however, under consideration
