Abstract :
A novel, patented, mechanical rowing force sensor has been simulated, constructed and tested. The sensor was set in a modified oarlock together with electronic processing including a Bluetooth transmitter. A Bluetooth-enabled mobile telephone/ laptop with a Graphical User Interface written in Java was used to display the 2-dimensional force on an oar vs. time. The visual display to a coach of rowing effort enabled skills to be optimized for maximum velocity of a rowing shell. This has been tested in practice and is creating interest amongst professional rowing coaches.
