Abstract :
Experiments designed to investigate surface degradation of XLPE by corona discharges between circular electrodes are described. Charge injection behavior was also studied by measuring the surface potential Vs, which was found to be radially symmetrical and strongly influenced by the particular conditions of the experiment. Degradation patterns observed for static flowing N2 and O2 atmospheres are reported, and it is shown how they correlate with Vs(r). A complicated interplay of electrostatic charging, gas phase and surface chemistry, and gas dynamics were observed
