Abstract
This paper examines several performances of synchronous motors, where the rotor has three slits per pole and thus a saliency exists. One synchronous reluctance motor and four PM/reluctance hybrid motors are produced and tested. Both the stator and rotor of all prototype motors are the same, but the volume of the permanent magnet inserted into the silts is adjusted and, as a result, the magnet flux is different. The effects of adding a permanent magnet into the rotor on the machine parameters and the operating performance are examined by the various experimental results and theoretical studies. It is shown that the prototype motor can offer a great choice of design varieties of speed versus power characteristics by adjusting the volume of the permanent magnet and that it can be applied to many applications
