  • Abstract
This paper presents an idea of implementing space vector modulation (SVM) technique in programmable hardware to control both single-phase and three-phase induction motors. Instead of a traditional use of SVM for three-phase induction motors with fixed 120-degree phase difference, the phase angles of pulse width modulation (PWM) signals introduced in this paper can be digitally varied, with one degree resolution, from 0deg-360deg. This design is therefore applicable for various single-phase motors. We implement the whole design in a Xilinx Spartan II chip, and test in a real condition. The results show that using a field programmable gate array (FPGA), instead of microcontrollers, offers greater speed and reliability
