Abstract :
This paper presents the results of physical experiments on a ±10 kVAr STATCOM model developed by Tsinghua University of China, which is the prototype of a ±20 MVAr STATCOM to be commissioned in the Henan province of China. A series of physical experiments, including open/closed loop step response, pulse-blocking under severe disturbances, voltage regulation improvement, voltage stabilization under surge loads, power system stability limits enhancement and damping improvement of power swings, were performed on the model to simulate the performance of the STATCOM in a real power system. The conclusions derived in the laboratory are expected to be helpful to the operation of the ±20 MVAr STATCOM in the near future.
