  • Abstract
The bottom roughness of sea ice and the turbulence in the underlying ocean boundary layer are examined via two types of smart acoustic current meters (SACMs). During periods of rapid sampling, the variance of the observed horizontal component of ocean velocity can be used in combination with a simple boundary layer model to infer under-ice roughness. Local variations in the roughness field may be deducted by noting the direction of the mean flow. A boundary layer model can also be utilized as a consistency check between two current meters that are deployed on the same line. The performance of the rotor-type current meters suffered from repeated collisions with several types of jellyfish
