Abstract
Database management systems (DBMSs) are being used in a wide variety of domains to handle many types of data. Scientific data pose a special challenge to DBMSs due to their volume and complex nature. The object-oriented model has many additional capabilities over the relational model that enables the database designer to capture the semantics of the data better. The paper describes the process of re-engineering a part of a relational database to an object-oriented database. The transformation of the relational schema to an object-oriented schema, the implementation of the new schema using an object-oriented DBMS, and a user interface for the new database are described
