  • Abstract
Achieving reliable underwater communications in shallow water is a difficult task due to the random time varying nature of multipath propagation. This paper describes a novel coherent space-time processing method for acoustic communications in a marginally overspread channel operating between 16 kHz and 32 kHz. The FAU-MillsCross, a 64-channel high performance acoustic receiver, is our real-time development platform. Using the FAU general purpose acoustic modem as a moving source, reliable communication is achieved up to 32000 bps at 3200 meters range in shallow and very shallow water
