Abstract :
When a rotor is simultaneously rotated and translationally moved above an aluminum guideway a traveling time-varying magnetic field is created in the air-gap. This field induces eddy currents in the guideway that can simultaneously create suspension and propulsion or breaking forces. The field and forces created by this moving rotor are modeled using a novel 2D analytic based A-φ method in which the rotor field is incorporated into the boundary conditions of the guideway. The model accuracy is verified using finite element analysis.
