Abstract :
Internet protocol (IP) networks are common in the commercial sector and are being increasingly used in a military environment. Tactical and mobile sub-networks require suitable communications bearers to support wide area network (WAN) connectivity. HF has traditionally been thought of as unsuitable for supporting IP WANs due to the variability of the channel and the low data rates achieved with traditional modulation schemes such as FSK. This situation has now changed due to the significant increases in achievable data rates on HF channels using modern waveforms and the development of efficient data link layer protocols designed specifically for HF such as STANAG 5066
