Abstract :
The performance of a channel decoder can be considerably improved if a priori information about the source bits is used. Many source coding schemes for analog signals still have correlation between bits of successive frames. We show that soft-outputs and bit correlations can be converted into a priori values for the next frame and used by a modified Viterbi algorithm, the APRI-SOVA. Gains of several decibels with respect to classical Viterbi decoding are obtained for the mobile GSM coding scheme and PCM transmission schemes
