Abstract
Until the privatisation of the United Kingdom electricity supply industry, and the opening up of the European market place, London Underground Limited (LUL) was largely tied to the procurement of equipment as specified by the major equipment purchasers, that is the national supply industry. Here, the authors describe how, from 1989 onwards, LUL has looked to Europe as a possible source of equipment. This has led to a need to change the content and format of specifications. Experience in procurement from this new market, together with feedback from some new and potential suppliers, has led to a further review of LUL specifications. This in turn has suggested some new formats for the presentation of information within documents
