  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Early investment in fibre to the home gives our modern Swiss information and knowledge society a unique opportunity to increase the attractiveness of Switzerland as a business location. In order to connect Swiss homes and businesses with fibre-optic cabling as quickly as possible, Swisscom favours a cooperation model in which the new infrastructure is rolled out with partners such as utility providers or telecommunication companies that are willing to invest. Cooperation agreements have already been concluded in seven major cities (Basle, Berne, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, St. Gallen and Zurich), one town (Pfyn) and one canton (Fribourg). To avoid a parallel rollout and ensure competition — on infrastructure — at a very early stage, the major players in the fibre market came to an agreement with the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) in autumn 2009 to implement a multi-fibre architecture. Moreover, it was agreed that all network and service providers would have access under the same conditions and to the various network levels. This ultimately ensures that consumers are free to choose their telecom provider. The players in the fibre market also agreed on other standards such as using the single connector type for plugs in homes. Thanks to this, customers shouldn´t encounter any problems when switching providers.
