Abstract :
This paper demonstrates a new phase-shifting up-converter targeted for 30GHz advanced phased array beamforming applications. The approach makes use of a phase-oversampling vector modulator in the LO domain to generate variable phases and amplitudes for each array element. A complex gain constellation with 81 points can be formed with 10° phase resolution and 2-bit amplitude resolution. The up-converter has a measured maximal conversion gain of +10dB and OIP3 of +3dBm while consuming 393mW from a 3.3V supply voltage. Implemented in 0.25-μm SiGe:C BiCMOS the up-converter has a compact core area of 0.135mm2.
