Abstract :
The development of the home satellite television industry is described, and attention is given to such technology issues as standards and compatibility, and spectrum allocations. It is argued that direct satellite broadcasting, in both C-band and Ku-band, presents the most flexible and viable form of delivery for HDTV (high-definition television). It is concluded that future growth of the home satellite industry will be spurred by the demand for a `home theatre´, with HDTV playing a vital role in the development of that concept
